From the ancient forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to the sandstone gorges of Ohio, here are the top five trails to explore on a Great Lakes fall hiking trip.

There are few things quite like waking before dawn, pulling on a pair of well-worn boots, and arriving at the trailhead just as the sun peeks above the treeline. Your breath hangs in the crisp air as you take your first steps across a carpet of freshly fallen leaves. Autumn around the Great Lakes is a masterclass in seasonal color, with rich oranges, deep crimsons, and golden ambers firing up the canopy.

These five parks are worth the drive this year, with four of them located directly along the Great Lakes shoreline, while one classic inland stop in Ohio rounds out the trip. If you love hiking the Midwest, chances are you already know these names, but seeing them in peak foliage is a whole new experience.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Michigan

As the largest state park in Michigan, the Porkies encompass over 60,000 acres of wild waterfalls, river valleys, and sweeping lake views. The Lake of the Clouds overlook is the reason most people plan a trip to this place, and we think it’s worth every bit of the hype. A brief climb through the hardwoods brings you to an outcrop where the ground drops away into a vivid, wooded valley, with Lake Superior shimmering on the horizon. From there, the Escarpment Ridge Trail offers miles of elevated walking above one of the last remaining tracts of old-growth forest in the Midwest. For a shorter loop, head down toward Mirror Lake or make the climb to the Summit Peak observation tower.

Tettegouche State Park, Minnesota

Covering more than 9,300 acres of boreal forest along Lake Superior’s North Shore, Tettegouche is defined by its rugged rock formations and dramatic water features. Build your day around Shovel Point, an hour-long hike from the visitor center that leads to a high cliff of ancient volcanic rock jutting out into Superior. Standing on the ledge in October with an offshore wind and open water stretching to the horizon offers a completely different vibe than a standard forest trail. Before leaving, head over to High Falls on the Baptism River, which is considered Minnesota’s highest waterfall entirely within state lines.

Indiana Dunes State Park, Indiana

Indiana Dunes protects more than 2,000 acres of diverse landscape, including quiet oak savannas, inland wetlands, and three miles of Lake Michigan coastline. If you are up for a workout, tackle the 3 Dunes Challenge, a steep trek up the park’s highest sand dunes, culminating at Mt. Tom, 192 feet above the water. The elevation rewards you with panoramic views of the shoreline framed by vibrant fall foliage. For a slower pace, the interior forest trails offer a serene look at the park’s rich flora and migratory wildlife.

Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

Hocking Hills is carved into seven distinct hiking areas: Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, Rock House, Conkle’s Hollow, Cedar Falls, Cantwell Cliffs, and Whispering Cave. If you want to catch early peak color, aim for the elevated rims of Conkle’s Hollow or Cantwell Cliffs in mid-October. The deep, shaded gorges at Old Man’s Cave and Ash Cave run cooler and retain their leaves longer into the month, making them perfect for late-October visits. If you are planning around an event, the annual Grandma Gatewood Fall Colors Hike, a free, ranger-led, six-mile trek from Old Man’s Cave to Cedar Falls, is set for October 10, 2026.

Presque Isle State Park, Pennsylvania

A 3,200-acre recurved peninsula extending into Lake Erie, Presque Isle provides a gentler, more open trail system featuring sandy beaches, historic lighthouses, and calm bay waters. While flatter than the ridge hikes farther west, the coastal scenery here is worth a trip. Presque Isle Bay is celebrated as one of the premier bass fishing destinations in the Northeast, and the peninsula serves as a critical rest stop along the Atlantic Flyway for migrating birds, making this an essential stop for birders.

One thing worth knowing before you plan the trip: color moves north to south through October. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Minnesota’s North Shore peak first, often in late September to early October. Hocking Hills and Presque Isle hit a little later in the month, making them ideal stops for the second half of fall.
